Vintage Garment Restoration
|
Janet
Davis Cleaners has been performing wedding gown services for Detroit and all of Michigan since 1954,
when our current Berkley location was opened. Our gown restoration
process is similar to that of how museums store and care for their
delicate clothing. Each gown or garment is cared for individually, and is never
mixed with another vintage item or with regular dry cleaning.
|
Step 1: Inspection prior to
cleaning
|
| |
The first thing we do before restoring your
vintage garment or wedding gown is a close inspection. Next, we test the
material to find the best cleaning method for your garment. We do this by testing a small, inconspicuous part of the
garment or gown. Next we test
several beads (if there are any) on the vintage garment to ensure they wont come off during the cleaning
process.
|
|
Step 2: Preparation for
cleaning
|
| |
Based on the results of
the inspection from the first step, we will select the best
cleaning method (we have several cleaning methods, all on-site,
to choose from) for your vintage garment or vintage wedding gown. For certain methods, any
beads must be covered and any flowers and hoops have to
be removed. |
|
Step 3: Pre-spotting
|
| |
This is where the bulk of the work happens on
your vintage garment. All of the dirty areas and spots are
meticulously treated prior to cleaning. This step requires an
intimate knowledge of fabrics and spot removal chemistry. A dry
cleaning technician will spend an unlimited amount of time on
your garment going over every inch. Not every spot and stain can
come out, but no expense is spared in trying. |
|
Step 4: Cleaning
|
| |
The first phase of the cleaning step is a series
of baths to restore the color of the garment.
The cleaning phase cleans your entire
garment and also flushes out any spotting solutions we used during
the pre-spotting phase. Every gown/garment is cleaned individually,
never in combination with regular dry cleaning. |
|
Step 5: Steaming/Pressing
|
| |
You vintage item will be pressed or steamed to
restore the original shape of the garment. |
